RFID promotes the reform of pharmaceutical supply chain management: two-way improvement of drug safety and efficiency

In the medical field, a large number of errors in prescriptions, drug delivery, and medication take place every year, leading to some medical accidents. According to official statistics, at least 200,000 people die from counterfeit medicines and improper medications in China each year, and the global economic loss in these areas is as high as 75 billion U.S. dollars each year. In addition, counterfeit and inferior drugs account for approximately 10% of the global pharmaceutical market.

Under such circumstances, it is very necessary to use RFID technology in the management of medicines.

After the drugs are identified using RFID tags, each link of the drug from the factory to the sale can be tracked in real time. Improved drug tracking methods can help hospitals save costs and curb the proliferation of counterfeit and inferior drugs.

At the same time, the use of terminal products to record and upload relevant data in real time ensures the safety of medicines to a large extent. Therefore, it is very meaningful to use RFID in drug management.

In early March of this year, Japan Post stated that in order to curb the impact of the proliferation of counterfeit drugs, it would invest about 100 billion yen (equivalent to RMB 6.5 billion) to introduce blockchain and RFID technology for drug transportation. Japan Post will attach RFID electronic tags to medicines, install sensors that can read ambient temperature and location information in containers, and install RFID and sensor information special equipment in factories, pharmaceutical companies, warehouses, and transportation vehicles.

At present, the international community attaches great importance to the tracking of medical products. For example, the US FDA has passed legislation to strengthen the application of drug transportation, sales, access, and traceability systems. In addition to the benefits of drug safety, RFID is also very necessary for the improvement of the informatization level of the pharmaceutical supply chain. In general, the use of RFID technology can regulate the pharmaceutical production and marketing market, reduce unnecessary intermediate circulation links, fully control product inventory, and improve production efficiency.
